Undergoing a neuropsychological or psychological evaluation is a multi-step process designed to thoroughly understand your (or your child’s) strengths, challenges, and needs. Below is an outline of what to expect at each appointment, as well as important preparation tips.
What to Expect During Your Neuropsychological or Psychological Evaluation Appointments
Getting Prepared for Your Appointment:
Gather the information that you feel will best encompass your concerns. In order to do this, there are a few things we at MSPC have done to assist you along the way.
- Call or Email the office to get scheduled for your evaluation.
- Have your insurance card on hand to send the office a copy of it.
- Know what your general concerns are so that the scheduler can get you to the right place.
- Have your insurance card on hand to send the office a copy of it.
- Set up your client portal.
- Complete the paperwork sent to you. These include consents as well as questionnaires that will help your process go smoothly.
- If you can answer all the questions, that's great. If not, that's okay as well. No need to fret.
Appointment 1: Clinical Intake (60 to 90 minutes)
- Purpose: You will meet with the doctor or a trained fellow to discuss your concerns and reasons for seeking evaluation, whether for yourself or your child.
- What Happens: The clinician will ask questions about current concerns, medical and developmental history, and any relevant background information. This is a conversational appointment focused on gathering information.
- What to Bring/Prepare:
- Complete all paperwork sent to you online before your appointment.
- Bring a copy of your insurance card.
- Know the location of your appointment.
- If your child is being evaluated, please bring them with you.
- You may bring a partner or parent if you think their input will be helpful, but we ask that you limit the number of attendees.
Appointment 2a: Testing Session (4–6 hours)
- Purpose: You (or your child) will complete standardized testing with a trained assistant. These tests help evaluate cognitive, behavioral, emotional, and/or academic functioning.
- What Happens:
- The session begins at 9 AM and continues until noon.
- You will have a one-hour lunch break.
- Testing resumes at 1 PM with your assistant, who will update you on the remaining time.
- The assistant is extensively trained to administer and score these tests. If you have questions, they can connect you with the doctor.
- What to Bring/Prepare:
- Get a good night’s rest before your appointment.
- Take any prescribed medications as you normally would, unless your doctor has given different instructions.
- Eat prior to coming to ensure you have energy for the session.
- Bring snacks, water, and anything else you need to be comfortable during breaks.
Appointment 2b: Autism-Specific Follow-Up (If Applicable, 1 hour)
- Purpose: For evaluations related to Autism, sometimes an additional follow-up appointment is needed to gather more information.
- What Happens:
- You will meet with the doctor for a focused discussion.
- While most questions will be directed to the individual being evaluated, input from a partner, close friend, or parent can be very helpful.
- What to Bring/Prepare:
- Adults are encouraged (but not required) to bring a supportive person who knows them well.
- For children, a parent or guardian should attend.
Appointment 3: Feedback Session
- Purpose: The doctor will review your (or your child’s) test results, discuss any diagnoses, and outline recommendations or treatment planning.
- What Happens:
- The session focuses on helping you understand the findings and what steps can be taken moving forward.
- There will be time to ask questions and discuss next steps.
- What to Bring/Prepare:
- You may bring one supportive person to this appointment if you wish.
General Tips for All Appointments:
- Arrive on time and allow for possible delays.
- Ask questions if you are unsure about any part of the process.
- Bring any additional documentation or information requested by the office.
If you have specific concerns or need accommodations, please contact the office prior to your appointments.
